New Arizona Auto Insurance Minimum Limits Went into Effect July 1

For policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2020, Arizona increased the minimum limits of automobile liability insurance to $25,000 / $50,000 / $15,000.

For a motorist who is covered only to the minimum liability limits, the following now apply:

25,000 is the most the motorist's insurance company will pay to one person that suffered bodily injury or death as a result of an accident ($25,000 per person).

$50,000 is the most the insurance company will pay to two or more people that were injured or died in an accident ($50,000 per accident).

$15,000 is the most the insurance company will pay for damage to another person's property ($15,000 for property damage).

The changes are set forth in state law (A.R.S. § 28-4009).

All liability policies that are issued on or after July 1, 2020, must be issued with these new limits. All existing policies that renew on or after July 1, 2020, will automatically be increased to $25,000 / $50,000 / $15,000. If, in the meantime, you would like to increase your coverage to the new minimums, you can contact your insurance agent.

Before this change, Arizona's minimum auto liability limits ($15,000 / $30,000 / $10,000) were among the lowest in the country. In fact, this increase is the first in Arizona in almost 50 years (the previous limits were enacted in 1972). Considering the fact that an air ambulance bill routinely exceeds $25,000, and a used Honda Civic can sell for more than $20,000, the increased limits are still inadequate for the damages caused by many car crashes.

By purchasing insurance with the $25,000 / $50,000 / $15,000 limits, you are "street legal." In other words, you have complied with Arizona's motor vehicle financial responsibility law, and you will not receive a civil citation for inadequate coverage if you are asked for proof of insurance during a traffic stop or after a crash. However, if you want to adequately protect yourself and others, you should seriously consider purchasing additional liability insurance.
